5 Reasons I Decided to Study Software Engineering

First of all, thank you for reading my blog! I really appreciate it. Seriously thanks.

After graduating college I was somewhat floating from job to job, not really finding anything that I truly enjoyed. 5 jobs later I realized my dream job wasn’t just going to find me. I had to ask the right questions, do some serious self-reflecting on my skills and abilities, and lay out my likes and dislikes. One of my close friends was a software engineer at a small mom-and-pop company at the time and recommended I take a look at software engineering. So off to Google I went to find out what it means to be a software engineer and why anyone would want to do it. A few weeks later I realized this is exactly the career I’ve been looking for for so long and here why:

1. I’m a natural problem solver

Once I get started on a problem I can’t stop until I find a solution. I love the entire process. From realizing there is a problem, researching possible solutions, trying out the best ones, failing, trails and tribulations, headaches, and then success! Then I finally understand the WHY behind why my code was broken in the first place! It’s an awesome feeling.

2. I love learning

I have always had a passion for learning. The fast-paced software engineering field seems perfect for me. Just when I think I’ve learned all there is to know about a language. BAM! A new feature, or a new language to learn all together. This is a field where I will be constantly learning, and I will never know everything. That is extremely exciting to me. I’m ready to take on that challenge.

3. Opportunity to work remote

Working from home has always sounded like a dream to me. No more worrying about beating rush hour traffic. Unconcerned with how long it will take to defrost my car before I can hit the road. And packing a lunch and remembering to bring all my condiments become a thing of the past. And most importantly being able to create a workspace that is completely and uniquely mine.

4. Ability to change the world

Everyone uses software. A single piece of software has the ability change our entire world. Something I can’t physically touch holds so much power and potential. Unless I’m living off the grid(and even then it would very difficult to avoid), software is integrated into every part of my life. Software is implemented in the logic behind air and land transportation, commercial retail, the healthcare system, school and education programs and so much more. Software engineering is here and it’s do amazing things.

5. It’s cool

Let’s face it. Software engineering is cool. It’s amazing that a few simple lines of code can do so much behind the scenes. I’m not just preaching to the choir here either. Everyone else thinks it’s cool too. When you tell someone who is not in the technology field that you build software for a living, they are mind blown. I’m experiencing it now and all I’m doing is telling people that I’m learning how to build software.

I’m now in my 3 week of the software engineering program at Flatiron School and I’m going full force. It’s definitely difficult and challenging but I wouldn’t want to have it any other way.
